Nizza_kwNice, 26-28 June 2013,  Europe’s largest coffee industry event, SCAE World of Coffee, Nice 2013, ended on a high note with the announcement of the winners of the four world coffee competitions, which took place at The Acropolis – Palais des Expositions.  The three-day event was packed with: workshops, competitions, the World Roasters Summit, forums and the trade fair also produced a number of other winners throughout the show including the New Product of the Show Awards, the SCAE Awards for Excellence and the SCAE Coffee Photography Competition.

World Coffee Events (WCE), a sister company to SCAE, announced the 2013 World Latte Art Champion, 2013 World Coffee in Good Spirits Champion, 2013 World Cup Tasters Champion and the first-ever World Coffee Roasting Champion.


World of Coffee at The Acropolis – Palais des Expositions, Nice

A total of 28 National Latte Art Champions, 21 National Coffee in Good Spirits Champions and 35 National Cup Tasting Champions competed in these events. With the World Coffee Roasting Championship taking place for the first time at this year’s World of Coffee, there were 11 National Roasting Champions taking part.


World Latte Art Championship, Nice 2013

The 2013 World Latte Champion is Hisako Yoshikawa from Ogawa Coffee Co. LTD., JAPAN and the 2013 World Coffee in Good Spirits Champion is Victor Delpierre from Cafés Richard, FRANCE.

Together with the 2013 World Cup Taster Champion Lajos Horvath from HUNGARY and the 2013 World Coffee Roasting Champion Naoki Goto from JAPAN.

Also victorious, were the winners of the New Product of the Show Awards. Especially designed to highlight the new products and services for 2013 from the exhibitors present at SCAE World of Coffee Nice. The following companies proudly accepted their awards…

Mr David Veal, Executive Director of the SCAE announced at the show that SCAE World of Coffee 2013 will take place in the spectacular location of Rimini, Italy. The WCE also announced that they will be bringing the World Barista Championship, the World Brewers Cup Championship and the World Coffee Roasting Championship to SCAE World of Coffee, Rimini 2014, 10-12 June.  These events are used by the WCE to engage the speciality coffee community and promote coffee excellence and quality worldwide. The annual SCAE Awards for Excellence were also presented at the show.  Sponsored by BUNN the awards were presented by SCAE Board Member, Lina Chiodo from BUNN.

The five awards were as follows:

Young Entrepreneur:
Presented to an enthusiastic member of the coffee industry, preferably under 30 years old. This person shows drive to persevere in their field to be successful in the trade. The winner: Aysin Aydogdu.

Changing Lives at Origin :
This award is presented to a smallholder, estate, cooperative, mill or farm in an origin that has worked or done research into improving the production or preparation of green coffee. This must be considered in relation to the green bean, the environment, or the coffee community.  The winner: Dethlev Cordts.

The Innovation Award:
Someone who has successfully produced something new to promote the quality of coffee. This could be in the production of drinks, promotion of the product, development of machinery and equipment or any other innovative idea. The winner: Jacu Coffee Roastery.

The Passionate Educator:
Anyone who has made a concerted effort to communicate to others the wonderful pleasure that coffee can bring us. All communication tools that appeal to our five senses  can be used: the spoken, written or printed word, the arts such as photography and painting, or even through music and drama. The winner: Daniela Nowitzki

Lifetime Achievement:
This person has stood the Test of Time. A person who has furthered the interests of the industry by promoting the concept of quality coffee in a statesmanlike manner. The winning person is recognised for their experience and knowledge of the trade, having their focus on the promotion of quality. This year the judges decided to award two Lifetime Achievement Awards to: Colin Smith (Smith’s Coffee, UK) and Trygve Klingenberg (Solberg and Hansen, Norway).

SCAE’s Annual Coffee Photography Competition received the most entries this year and made for a very intersting exhibition at the show .
The winners were:
1st  placeMonroy, a worker at the Menendez family farm, Las Delicias, in El Salvador by Jonatan Låstbom for Johan & Nyström
2nd placeEdy Piro at the 2013 UK Coffee in Good Spirits Competition by Glenn Watson
3rd placeChemex ripples by Richard Littlewood, for Coffee Community Ltd.
